1. Any science story that includes Tintin is fine.
2. The periodical cicadas that I grew up with are wonderful, though their din drives some people mad. But I came to love the nonperiodical cicadas of SE Asia even more, with their constantly shifting choruses through the day and night. It’s as if there are hundreds of composers trying to perform their works simultaneously.
I was conducting an opera on Brownsea Island that year, and the company chartered a boat to go out into the channel. There was a very slight darkening on an already cloudy day, and a general sense of weirdness. Not the transcendent experience many were hoping for, but worth it nevertheless.
My boyfriend now husband was working in CERN but I decided that it was too expensive to go so went to my dads in Cornwall to be underwhelmed. I decided to visit CERN after anyway, I should’ve just gone there for the eclipse, still kicking myself.
Made my kids watch a documentary with me last weekend and learned the 400x fact/coincidence. Mind was blown. I’m in Ohio and we are in the path of totality! I am so excited! 🤩
UTTERLY MESMERIZED by that dance video 🤩
Brilliant, isn’t it?
Short purposeful life for those cicadas.
Fascinating collection of “things” today. All six.
Thanks!

I remember the eclipse of 1999 when the clouds got a bit darker. 50% of buisnesses in Cornwall are still called eclipse

The dance is stupendous.
Mesmerising.
Excellent typography chart, reminds me of my favourite ‘gadzook’. Good that the blossom has survived the rain. Thank you for all.
Such a fun collection.
