Absolute joy. Also I visited Durham while they were building the Lego cathedral models and was able to place a couple of bricks in. Very impressive aren’t they.
I adore @Lev Parikian’s six things in my inbox every week, but I think this one has to be my favourite and most enchanting so far. So this is my this month’s nomination for @Tara Penry’s Enchanted Forest #3.
First moment of enchantment came with the puffin. From the light and the lichen I made a personal bet that it had been taken in Scotland, which I lost. It was in fact taken in Iceland.
The second moment of enchantment was Barbie Girl in the style of six composers. I particularly liked the Chopin ‘hit-or-miss left-hand’ and the ‘flamboyant modulation that goes nowhere’.
And if that wasn’t enchantment enough. Lev through in the cute sounds of a seven week old squirrel!
Sooooo... On handedness, that questionnaire is misleading if it doesn't ask about how much you were forced to use your right hand when a child. There were no left handed scissors when I was a child so I had to use my right hand. Ditto serrated knives — serrations exist to counteract the natural twisting motion when you cut, so using a right-handed knife in the left hand multiplies the twist and makes cutting harder. You have no choice but to learn to use your right hand. I was forbidden at school from playing sport, including throwing, left-handed. I wasn't when allowed to sew left-handed. So a lot of my answers are skewed by the fact that many, many adults forced me to use my right hand for many tasks from a very young age. No matter the freedom now, those habits are set.
Thank you very much Mr Parikian. You bring joy.
That Britten pastiche....😂

The piano pastiches - I’d forgotten them!! 🤣🤣
Huge thanks for the reminder, you are much appreciated 😊😊
Thank you for the squirrel!
I'd forgotten the excellence and foolery of Dudley Moore, thank you!

Well now I'm crying actual tears at the Wind Phone. Thank you VERY much Jerry, I mean Lev.
(My newsletter later this week also includes squirrel action. Must be the season).
