I remember going up to the heath (Holt Heath, Dorset) to see nightjars with my Dad when I was young. Though we didn't really see them, we heard them. And they really are quite late risers.
Many years later, living in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, I looked out my office window on the first floor and saw a bald eagle fly down the street at eye level. Really quite something!
I'm not a proper twitcher, I don't know much about birds, but I love them anyway.
On Thursday we took some friends to a magical place on the Isle of Man (my parents live on the island, although we are not Manx). After exploring a particularly beautiful wood and using the Merlin app (seriously, I'm obsessed) to identify goldfinches, a wren, sparrows and chaffinches, we went to look at a ruined abandoned farmhouse (known on the island as a 'tholtan'). When we got back to the car there was a pigeon on the roof. It seemed quite friendly and was wearing 'bracelets' on both ankles, so we thought it was probably a racing pigeon? I'm not sure how you'd tell. Anyway it meant I got to look at it much more closely than usual as it wasn't interested in getting off the car. Maybe it had flown a long way and wanted a lift. Such lovely iridescent feathers.
Aw I need to send this to my Mum. She has pigeon friends in her garden. They bring her great joy. They once pushed me out of the garden when I was trying to sunbathe. Clearly it's their domain :')
Thank you, I love all this. Not sure if the pigeon clap or the lindy hop is my favourite.. but what a world that has such creatures in it!
I have a problem with Cambridge as my capital. I was born in Oxford but live in London!!!! Hahaha!!!?
Looks like Birmingham could be renamed Four Corners.
Dear god, Lindy hopping is exhausting even to watch!!
Another gem of 6 Things tho.
