Thank you, Lev, for brightening and cheering this dull anticlimax of a day. Son's gone back to university and the bitter wind and rain were rather overplaying the pathetic fallacy, so the nightingale song, cheery dunnock and prospect of seeing a swallow in the coming weeks was just what needed.

It was a bit grim today, wasn’t it? Glad you enjoyed it.

You write exquisitely! I happened upon this article as I blundered around in Notes for the first time (still finding my way around all that is Substack). Thank you for sharing your words!

This was such a great post. I thought I saw a swift last week while we were away in the Lake District but it was such a brief flash, I wasn't sure if I'd imagined it

Those brief flashes are frustrating, aren’t they? They’ll be back for sure pretty soon, though.

Like others, I'm still not sure how I found myself reading your article, but it's good to find a place where the writing puts a smile on your face at the start of the day. And as for dunnocks, my impression of them changed when we saw 2 of them mobbing a red kite a few days back and seeing it off. Impressively courageous stuff!

Oh I love it when little birds take on massive ones. Saw two great tits having a go at a buzzard last summer. Saw it off, too.
