Welcome

I’m Lev Parikian, a writer, musician, birder and general enthusiast. I live in London, England.

I send out a weekly email (usually on Saturdays, but you know how it is) called Six Things – things that have caught my eye, ear, nose, or that unknown sense that makes you turn round and go ‘hello, what was that?’

In 2026 the last Six Things post of the month will be in the form of a podcast in which a guest brings six things to talk about. For the audio-averse there will also be a transcription of the chat.

As well as the weekly posts there will also be extra monthly posts in 2026 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Why Do Birds Suddenly Disappear?my book about the year I spent trying to see 200 species of British bird. For free subscribers that’ll mean a short monthly piece about my birding progress in 2026, comparing it with the same month in 2016. For paid subscribers there will be all sorts of goodies, including audiobook and PDF versions of the book (a chapter a month), a 15% discount on the signed and dedicated copy of the paperback edition, extra content about the book, and chat threads where people can ask questions about any aspect of it – birds, music, places, the writing process, anything that occurs to you.

If you subscribe you’ll receive all mailings by default, but you can easily manage which ones you get in your subscription settings.

If you want to get a flavour of what you’re in for, there’s an example of a Six Things post here.

‘Six Things’ was chosen as a ‘recommended’ Substack in May 2023, and they sent me this nice badge to prove it

If you happen to know already that you want to share this with a friend, here’s another purple button to help you do just that (they do love purple buttons here)
