The sound you hear is that of all my science teachers rolling either their eyes or in their graves. If you concentrate really hard you might hear a collective, stifled ‘HIM??!!’
Joking aside, I hope you’ll understand quite how pleased I am about this.
It’s partly that I am, really, a non-scientist writing about a subject that delights and intrigues and amazes me the more I think about it.
It’s partly because Elliott & Thompson, my wonderful publishers, are a small team punching way above their weight (the other five shortlisted books are from ‘big’ publishers).
But mostly it’s because I kept quiet about it for SIX WHOLE WEEKS, which is, frankly, the biggest achievement of all.
As well as being really pleased (and genuinely quite surprised) by the nomination, I’ve been relishing this quote from Bonnie Garmus (author of Lessons In Chemistry, and one of the judging panel):

Well deserved congrats, Lev. Unlike others in the genre Taking Flight managed to keep my interest all the way through and made me feel like I understood what you were talking about. Was it as effortless to write as it is to read?!
What I like about this list is that some of the authors, like you and Ed Yong, are very effective interpreters of science, while others like Nicklas Brendborg, are scientists who have learned to write for lay audiences. I am of the latter ilk as well. If we were to make a list of the greatest science books for lay readers, we would find a balance between scientists like Stephen Hawking and interpreters like Rebecca Skloot. There is a third group like Wohlleben, who pretend to write about science but really should be considered novelists.
