One of our local carrion crows brought a piece of crusty bread (maybe it was toast thrown out by someone- no doubt sourdough) and dunked it in the water of our birdbath, to soften it.

I loved this so much Lev. I once spent some time trying to buy the love of a Jackdaw at Hollyhock cafe in Richmond Park. I had seen it flying around to other peoples tables, and I wanted a visit, so I decided that I would save the last bit of the food I was eating as a kind of tithe for Jackdaw. I totally forgot that I'm actually incapable of saving leftovers of anything ever, so I had to resort (pathetically) to trying to entice it with crumbs that I had spilled on the table. It did not work.

Thanks Sarah. That means a lot. As for your efforts to entice jackdaw with crumbs, unfortunately unsurprising – they’re far too hard-nosed to accept such small offerings.

Reminds me of the time my 9 week old Border Collie puppy (whose reach we hadn’t quite adjusted to ) snaffled the fillet steak (not the rump please note, the fillet) from the counter as I turned aside for 10 seconds. He was out the dog flap in a second…..

Husband grabbed him, pup dropped the steak, the terrier (who probably put him up to it) bolted it in one while the pup did hard time in his crate!!!

Good story, well told. This reminds me of when I fed the magpies in my garden with mealworms. After scattering a few I left the bag on the garden table. The magpie, clearly fed up of rationing, decided to take the lot of them. He grabbed the zip locked bag and started to fly off with it, but dropped it in its hurry. I often wonder whether corvids can open ziplock, and I suspect they could if necessary.
