I have nothing to say.
This is a lie.
I have a lot to say, but what I really mean, I think, is that I have nothing to say that can conceivably be of any use.
And so I watch and read and listen with an increasing sense of despair at the hopelessness of the human condition, and grieve at the many lives so unnecessarily lost, the pain so cruelly inflicted, the general futility of it all.
For some years now I’ve occasionally responded to The General State Of Things by posting a photograph on Twitter with the caption ‘Good evening here is your emergency [whatever the photograph in question is of, usually some sort of bird looking silly, endearing or just plain gorgeous]’.
It’s a tradition I continue, but Twitter being what Twitter nowadays is (that is, not so much Twitter as Twitter used to be) I feel it’s a tradition worth expanding to other platforms.
So here – with thanks for your continued support, and your patience in the face of my neglect over the last few weeks – are Six Emergency Things…
